Dried kiwi is chewy and sweet. This dehydrated fruit contains very low calories and fat while high fiber and minerals. If you are doing a low-fat diet, then you would do well by having it in your meals.

Humans have been eating the kiwifruit for over 300 years. Originally found in China by the name ‘yang tao’, it is now grown and sold around the world. Its current name came from New Zealand, when growers there brand it after the flightless bird in hopes of making it more appealing to customers.

Dried kiwi, at 180 calories per serving, has more calorie content compared with a fresh one, which only has 42 calories per serving, because the dehydration process condenses all the nutrients of the fruit. One single kiwifruit has three times the Vitamin C content of an orange, more potassium than a banana, and more fiber than a bowl of bran cereal. Dried kiwi, being concentrated, has even more of these vital vitamins and minerals.

Dried kiwi contains 43g of carbohydrates, but only half a gram of fat, making it a perfect option for snacks and low-fat diets without sacrificing energy levels. Dried kiwi also contains 10 percent the recommended daily intake of folate, a mineral vital for pregnant and nursing women. It also contain the phytochemical lutein which helps prevent vision loss.

According to a recent study found in “World Journal of Gastroenterology,” Chinese people who eat dried kiwi at least twice a day experience relief from constipation, attributed to its fiber content. Dried kiwi also contains high concentrations of calcium and iron. The former boosts bone strength and density, while the latter is required for increased red blood cell production.

Dried kiwi is coated in granulated sugar to help keep it in storage. Therefore, ensure that you do not add too much sugar into foods with dried kiwi, as it could give rise to tooth decay and unhealthy weight gain. A positive thing about the sugar content, though, because of it, dried kiwi can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 6 months.
